2007 Asia Pacific Regional Winner    

 

THE 2007 ASIA PACIFIC REGIONAL ROUNDS

The 2007 Asia Pacific Regional Rounds had 39 teams from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea. The Regional Rounds were held from 10 to 14 April 2007 in Sydney.

The Indian Domestic Funding Rounds, sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organisation, was held from 23 to 25 March 2007 in Bangalore, India. In a very large field of teams, the Hidayatullah National Law University of Raipur won its place in Sydney.

The preliminary rounds were held in the Sydney offices of Blake Dawson Waldron, Clayton Utz and Ebsworth & Ebsworth, with a record 23 teams participating. Judges and observers alike have all commented on the close competitiveness of all teams in the 2007 Regional Rounds.

In the first set of quarter-finals held in the morning of Friday, 13 April 2007, held at Clayton Utz, Murdoch University of Australia (1) defeated the University of Auckland of New Zealand (8), the University of Queensland of Australia (3) defeated Parahyangan Catholic University of Indonesia (6) and the National University of Singapore (4) defeated the National University of Juridical Sciences of India (5). The upset was in the remaining quarter-final, with the University of Technology, Sydney (7) defeating the University of New South Wales of Australia (2).

In closely-contested semi-finals held in the afternoon of Friday, 13 April 2007, the University of Queensland defeated the National University of Singapore and Murdoch University defeated the University of Technology, Sydney.  The semi-finals were presided over by Prof. Ivan Shearer A.M. R.F.D., Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Sydney, in one and Prof. Andrew Byrnes, Professor of Law at the University of New South Wales, in the other.

The 2007 Regional Final was held on the afternoon of Saturday, 14 April 2007, in the Banco Court of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, as adjudicated by Mr. Ian Awford, Dr. Liara Covert and Prof. David Flint A.M.  In that round, the University of Queensland narrowly defeated Murdoch University and will represent this region in the world finals to be held in Hyderabad, India.
