2005 Asia Pacific Regional Winner    

 

THE 2006 ASIA PACIFIC REGIONAL ROUNDS

The 2006 Asia Pacific Regional Rounds had 40 teams from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand. This is by far the largest regional round in the history of the Lachs Moot. The Regional Rounds were held from 18 to 22 April 2006 in Sydney.

The Indian Domestic Funding Rounds, sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organisation, was held from 16 to 18 March 2006 in Bangalore, India. In a very large field of teams, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences of Kolkata won its place in Sydney.

The preliminary rounds were held in the Sydney offices of Baker & McKenzie, Clayton Utz and Ebsworth & Ebsworth, with a record 21 teams participating. Judges and observers alike have all commented on the close competitiveness of all teams in the 2006 Regional Round.

In the first set of quarter-finals, held at Clayton Utz, the University of Sydney (1) defeated the University of New South Wales (8), the University of Auckland (3) defeated the Flinders University of South Australia (6) and the National University of Juridical Sciences (4) defeated the University of Queensland (5). The upset was in the remaining quarter-final, with the University of Technology, Sydney (7) defeating the Parahyangan Catholic University (2).

In closely-contested semi-finals, the University of Auckland defeated the University of Technology, Sydney and the University of Sydney defeated the National University of Juridical Sciences.

The 2006 Regional Final was held in the Banco Court of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. The University of Auckland defeated the University of Sydney and will represent this region in the world finals to be held in Valencia, Spain, in October this year.
