2005 Asia Pacific Regional Winner    

 

THE 2005 ASIA PACIFIC REGIONAL ROUNDS

The 2005 Asia Pacific Regional Rounds had 30 teams from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore. This is by far the largest regional round in the history of the Lachs Moot. The Regional Round was held from 12 to 16 April 2005 in Sydney. There were a total of 8 teams from India, which constitutes a record in itself.

The China Domestic Funding Round, organised and sponsored by the China Institute of Space Law, was held on Sunday 20 February 2005 in Beijing, China, with the China University of Political Science and Law of Beijing prevailing over three other universities to win a place in Sydney. The Indian Domestic Funding Rounds, sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organisation, were held from 18 to 20 March 2005 in Bangalore, India. In a field of ten teams, the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research of Hyderabad winning its place in Sydney.

The preliminary rounds were held in the Sydney offices of Blake Dawson Waldron, Clayton Utz and Coudert Brothers, with a record 20 teams participating. Judges and observers alike have all commented on the close competitiveness of all teams in the 2005 Regional Round.

In the first set of quarter-finals, held at Blake Dawson Waldron, the University of Auckland (1) defeated the Gujarat National Law University (8) and the University of New South Wales (2) defeated the Flinders University of South Australia (7). The upsets were in the other two quarter-finals, with the National University of Singapore (5) defeating the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (4) and the Hidayatullah National Law University (6) defeating University of Queensland (3).

In closely-contested semi-finals, the National University of Singapore defeated the University of Auckland and the University of New South Wales defeated the Hidayatullah National Law University.

The 2005 Regional Final was held in the Banco Court of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. The National University of Singapore defeated the University of New South Wales and will represent this region in the world finals to be held in Fukuoka, Japan, in October this year.
