Five months after the decision in October 1999 to create the Asia Pacific Regional Round was made, a competition of 5 teams gathered in Sydney, Australia, to compete in the first regional competition.
The preliminary rounds were held at the Campbelltown Campus of the University of Western Sydney. It was from this year that the present format of having 4 preliminary rounds in a round-robin format before advancing to elimination finals were adopted.
In the semi-finals, held in the Federal Court of Australia, the National University of Singapore and the University of Sydney defeated the University of Western Sydney and the University of Waikato, respectively.
The 2000 final was held in the Supreme Court of New South Wales. The winner, the National University of Singapore, advanced to the world finals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but was defeated in the semi-finals.
